The composite material not only has non-uniform composite structure, but also has different thermal melting point in the composite layer, so it is not suitable to use the thermal cutting processing method. However, the traditional processing method is easy to produce two kinds of defects: one is the notch damage, that is, the delamination, tearing, burr, wire drawing and other phenomena near the edge of the notch; the other is the interlayer delamination, that is, the separation between the composite layers, which makes the internal structure of the component loose and reduces the strength of the component. Although laser can be used to cut part of composite materials, if laser cutting is used, the fiber in heat affected zone will debond with the matrix, the material will appear coking and hot cracking phenomenon, the width of the incision is uneven, the cutting end will form a carbonization layer, which will damage the composite materials; if plasma cutting is used, the ceramic materials can not be cut, which will cause local damage to the material and reduce the performance. But water cutting can solve these problems perfectly.

Because the ultra-high pressure water cutting belongs to the soft body jet cold cutting, it will not produce thermal reaction and make the material appear coking or hot cracking; when cutting, the cutting head is suspended on the surface of the workpiece, which also avoids the material damage caused by the contact with the material. For soft matrix composites such as plastics and man-made fibers, pure water can be used for cutting. For metal and nonmetal hard matrix composites, sand cutting method can be selected. The so-called sand cutting is to increase a certain proportion of garnet sand abrasive in the ultra-high pressure water jet to form water grinding cutting. In this way, the metal part and the non-metal part of the composite can be cut off, and the cutting section is smooth and undamaged.
